Objectives : Bipolar II depression represents a significant proportion of clinical depression and psychiatric inpatients. The aims of the current study were to describe clinical characteristics of inpatients with bipolar II depression and pharmacotherapeutic strategies, and to explore factors having a significant impact on the length of hospitalization.
Method : Medical records of 126 inpatients with bipolar II depression were reviewed and analyzed.
Results : The female to male ratio was 3.3 : 1 and female inpatients were 9 years older than male inpatients. The most frequently used medications were quetiapine and diavalproex. More than 80% of the patients received combined treatments. The mean length of hospital stay was 21.8 days. Among clinical and pharmaceutical treatment variables, changes in strategies for use of mood stabilizers or antipsychotics significantly predicted the length of hospitalization.
Conclusion : The profile of pharmacological treatments suggests that treatment choices are mainly based on both literature and empirical experiences. A quick decision for changes in strategies of pharmaceutical treatments can contribute to shortening the length of hospitalization.
